Protein Chefs Featured in Entrepreneur: From a $2,500 Side Hustle to a 7-Figure Meal Delivery Company

5 Min Read

On October 16, 2026, Entrepreneur featured Protein Chefs in its Side Hustle Spotlight series. The interview, written by senior features writer Amanda Breen, tells how our founder and CEO Ronneil Ramlal and co-founder Yuvika Wadhwa turned a $2,500 side project into a seven-figure meal delivery company serving Toronto and communities across Ontario.

A few days earlier, on October 13, Chief Executive also interviewed Ronneil about how studying our ad data revealed who our real customers were, and how changing our marketing to reach them helped double revenue.

We are proud of both features, and grateful to every customer who helped us get here. Below is a short look at our story, what we learned along the way, and what it means for the people who eat our meals every week.

Who Founded Protein Chefs?

Protein Chefs was founded in 2015 by Ronneil Ramlal and his wife, Yuvika Wadhwa. They met at the gym, and both took their fitness seriously. Ronneil grew up watching his father run his own business and was working as a supervisor at UPS. Yuvika was a pastry chef. Together they brought a mix of business and hospitality experience to the kitchen.

The idea came from their own routine. With busy corporate weeks, they struggled to meal prep and could not find a delivery service that was healthy, balanced and actually tasted good. So they decided to build one.

Starting With $2,500 and No Loans

Ronneil did not want to borrow money, so Protein Chefs was fully bootstrapped. About $2,500 from personal savings covered a first website, a chef hired by the hour and a rented kitchen.

Getting the first orders was the hard part. The team opened an Instagram account, posted consistently and reached out to fitness influencers, offering free meals in exchange for honest reviews. Those early reviews brought in the first paying customers.

From Side Hustle to a Seven-Figure Business

Revenue was steady from the start, but modest: about $4,000 a month in the beginning, growing to between $20,000 and $30,000 a month over the following years. In 2017, Ronneil left UPS to run Protein Chefs full time.

Growth then flattened for a few years. The turning point came when we invested more in marketing and realized our core customer was not only bodybuilders and athletes, but busy professionals who want to eat well without spending hours cooking. Once our message reflected that, revenue doubled. Protein Chefs reached seven figures in annual revenue in 2022 and has stayed there since, with 21% growth last year and about 30% growth this year, including our corporate partnerships.

Three Lessons From Building a Meal Delivery Company

1. Hire for the role, not just the skill

One of our biggest early mistakes was hiring a talented cook who was not ready to run a professional kitchen. Great food is only part of the job: a head chef also handles costing, standardized recipes, inventory and training a team. Bringing in experienced chefs allowed us to standardize the menu and add more dishes and meal plans.

2. Be transparent about how food is made

People care about how their food is prepared. When we started showing our chefs cooking from scratch and the standards we follow, customer trust grew. That is still how we operate today.

3. Every part of the business has to work

Great food will not grow a business if nobody knows about it, and great marketing will not keep customers if the meals do not live up to the promise. Kitchen, packaging, delivery and customer service all have to work together. In the interview, Ronneil also says he would have invested in marketing, the website and SEO much earlier.
